The Department of General Surgery and allied specialties at Govt. Medical College Anantnag is dedicated to provide best comprehensive surgical care to the people of valley and train the next generation of surgeons to serve the state. General surgery is the surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, and bile ducts and often the thyroid gland. It also deals with diseases involving the skin, breast, soft tissue, and hernias. The Department of General Surgery and allied specialties of GMC Anantnag started in year March 2019 with Professor (Dr) Mumtaz Din Wani as the Head of the department. The department flourished under the guidance of Dr Mohd Altaf Wani, Dr Nazir Ahmad Wani, Dr Zahid Mohd Rather, Dr Manmohan Singh, Dr Khalid Bashir and Dr Mohd Zahoor Hamdani. The department grew from performing basic open general surgery procedure to advanced laparoscopic surgeries, Malignancies, Urology, Hepato-biliary. The department is based on dedicated OPD Clinics and emergency, ward seeing around 200 patients per day including OPD patients (old and new) and trauma patients. It currently has bed strength of 72, supported with well furniture and medical equipment. The department is also dedicated with post-operative intensive care six bedded ward. These indoor patients and post-operative patients are taken care by the trained and dedicated staff. The department of surgery have dedicated two major operation theatre and one minor operation theatre equipped with latest anesthesia and surgical gadgets run by three surgical units with more 23 full time faculty. These theatres have well trained staff. We operate more than 160 patients per month as our routine work and around 160 minor operations. Besides this all emergencies including trauma to neck, chest, and abdomen are carried out by department of surgery on emergency basis, except complicated and radiologically proven peripheral and central vascular lesions. Our department provides excellent patient centered care, engaged in research and mentor shift to next generation surgeons. Our faculty has published numerous articles in various Journals showing the commitment to being innovative and leaders in their field. Our aim is to train young surgeons to high level of competency in clinical and academic surgery and guide them in becoming professional leaders in their field.
