Government Medical College, Anantnag, J&K.

Immediately after the approval from the Technical Committee of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Govt. of India, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology GMC Anantnag like other vital departments operating in a Medical College got established. Since its inception the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology GMC Anantnag was actively involved in conducting medico legal autopsies besides teaching and examining sexual assault cases. Historically, the challenging roles and responsibilities assigned to the speciality of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology are varied and diverse and as such this speciality is undoubtedly regarded as a connecting link between the Law and Medicine. Over the period of time and in view of technological infiltration in every aspect of life, this speciality has gained wide spread acceptance among the Investigation team members and Judiciary as an absolute aid in dealing with the matter of issues under hand. Under such roles, responsibilities and expectations, it is no wonder to observe that the Departments of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology has embraced a wide variety of needs and skills intertwining Medicine, Pathology, Science, Law and the Ethics.

As a matter of fact, right from the retinal scanning to trace evidences chemistry, actual Forensic Technologies are so advanced to aid in solving volume crimes that they seem like something from science fiction thrillers. However, in the fields of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, correct identification of a substance and its origin is of great importance. Be it the determination of a drug of abuse present at a crime scene, or what chemical warfare agent was administrated, the analysis and interpretation of such evidences are all challenging tasks
