Government Medical College, Anantnag, J&K.

GMC-Anantnag was established with a triple mandate to lead the state of J&K in the fields of medical education, training, research and patient care. The department of Anatomy was one of the first departments to be set up as one of the bed rock department of GMC-Anantnag. Initially for few years, the department was set on makeshift basis at the top floor of the MMABM associated hospital, where it very well served its purpose. The department along with other pre-clinical departments has been shifted to the main campus of GMC-Anantnag at Dialgam, where it occupies the ground floor and part of first floor of the departmental block building.

Major activities of the department are centered around teaching and research. The department of Anatomy is involved in teaching anatomy according to the latest CBME pattern as recommended by NMC. The department not only takes care of 100 MBBS students annually but also 110 nursing & paramedical students and in addition to this, it also takes vertically integrated classes of pre-final students.

The department of Anatomy has state-of-the-art facilities to the students. Being provided with a very spacious and well ventilated dissection hall to accommodate 150 students with mortuary coolers and storage tanks having capacity of 15-20 cadavers at a time. Currently we have 9 cadavers available for dissection along with 4 dissection microscopes. Separate rooms are available in DH for embalming and cold storage respectively. The department has two big size demo rooms with a capacity of 70-100, well equipped with audio-visual aids. For microscopic anatomy, the department has a big histology lab equipped with 53 microscopes of latest models and an attached preparatory lab with microtome, paraffin wax bath, various chemicals for staining and preparing slides. The department is also having histology slide bank with 10 sets of every tissue. We are also having a bone bank in which 4 sets of each and every individual human bone and a complete articulated skeleton is available for teaching. The dissection hall, museum, gallery have huge collection of models, charts and dummies on display. The department also has a departmental library with latest editions of anatomy books.

The undergraduate course taught by our distinguished faculty and residents, provide students with a solid foundation in the medical sciences especially the surgical and allied subjects.

The department of anatomy stresses more on the assessment part of teaching through weekly small group discussions and monthly regional grand tests.

Foundation course on stress and time management, communication skill is conducted in the first month of admission every year. An inquiry driven approach is encouraged among students to keep their initiative and interest alive by making them active participants in the teaching-learning process

I extend a very warm welcome to you for visiting the department of Anatomy online. Anatomy is one of the basic medical sciences, which is fundamental for medical curriculum and clinical research. Anatomy has grown extensively in fields like gross anatomy, clinical anatomy, cellular and bio-molecular anatomy, anatomical correlations in diagnostic & therapeutic imaging, clinical genetics, cancer genetics and so on. Anatomy plays a vital role in integrating clinical knowledge with newer concepts in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine.

The department currently teaches and trains 100 under graduates each year. Competency based medical education module as per NMC has been implemented since Undergraduate admission batch 2019. Vertical and horizontal integration with other specialties as per the CBME module help students to connect and understand the academic correlation and essential clinical skills. Various online resources and gross teaching modalities and teaching aids are used to impart the necessary and updated knowledge.

The Anatomy Department is reputed for its knowledgeable, hardworking and caring faculty members as well as enthusiastic, intelligent and disciplined students.
